STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST

GNC conducted a student essay contest in 2005 and 2006 to motivate Korean American students to think about practical solutions for immigrants to become well-integrated in the American society. GNC awarded each of the two winners $1000 prize. (Please click to read their essays) The two winners received wide coverage in the Korean media and drew attention within the community.

Good Neighboring Campaign(GNC) is sponsoring an essay contests for students. Ten thousand dollars in scholarship money will be awarded to students in four different contest periods.Four Grand Prize Winners of the contests will be eligible for participating in GNC Forum as panelists.

Who Can Participate: Current Korean American students: Ninth graders through college seniors.

Purpose of Contest: To encourage Korean American community members to become integral citizens in their communities and to increase efforts in enriching American cultural value as we preserve the unique Korean ancestral heritage. We believe that the Korean immigrant communities must participate in neighborhood activities in order to promote positive atmosphere in the larger American Society and become an integral part of United States.

Essay Topic: Realistic plans and ideas for stimulating and motivating Korean immigrant  community members to participate more actively in American neighborhood activities and community affairs.

Remarks: Winning essays must demonstrate on outstanding grasp of the values promoted by the Good Neighboring Campaign. We encourage you to visit Good Neighboring Campaign website at www.Goodneighboring.org to understand our campaign.

The Essay Length: 600–700 words. Please submit your essay in English.

Contest Submission Postmark Deadlines: Four chances to enter: July 31, 2005, December 31, 2005, July 31, 2006 and December 31, 2006. Students can enter as many contests as they like, but each student will only be awarded one prize.

Prizes: Grand Prize: $1,000Scholarship Fund (one awarded per contest)

First Prizes: $500 Scholarship Fund (two awarded per contest)

Second Prizes: $100 Scholarship Fund (five awarded per contest)

Essay Contest Rules

  • Essay submitted by e-mail should be sent Microsoft Word file as an attachment.
  • You must include information including your address, your e-mail address and your school transcript of the last semester.
  • All entries become the property of Good Neighboring Campaign and will not be returned.
  • Employees of the Good Neighboring Campaign, its board members and their immediate family members are not eligible for the contest.
  • Winners will be notified (and announced on our website) by e-mail in one month after the deadline. If a notified winner does not respond by e-mail within 14 days of notification, another winner will be selected from the entries.
